Descent: FreeSpace – The Great War is a seminal 1998 space combat simulator developed by Volition and published by Interplay Productions. Widely considered a masterpiece of the genre, the game is celebrated for its deep military science-fiction narrative, intense tactical dogfights, and its revolutionary scale of combat.
Despite the name, it shares very little in common with the original Descent games (which were 6-DOF corridor shooters); the “Descent” moniker was added primarily by the publisher for brand recognition before later entries dropped it entirely to become just FreeSpace. The Terran-Vasudan War: Humanity (The Galactic Terran Alliance) has been locked in a brutal 14-year resource war against an alien race called the Vasudans.
